Carbon steel is a versatile material used for making the wide array of screws that serve as vital fasteners in countless applications. Different screw types have evolved for specific uses, taking advantage of carbon steel's strength, machinability and low cost. Common carbon steel screw varieties include self-tapping, self-drilling, T17 timber, and resistant head.
Self-tapping screws have threads that cut into material as they are driven in, creating internal threads for securing into materials like plastics, sheet metal or wood.
Self-drilling screws combine drilling and tapping into one operation, fully eliminating any pilot hole requirement. Self-drilling screws provide fast assembly of overlapped metal sheets or other materials up to moderate thicknesses.
T17 screws are designed specifically for fastening into wood materials. They have a thinner shank and tapered shape for reducing wood splitting while providing holding power. T17s are commonly used in woodworking and construction projects.
Resistant screws have special head treatments to withstand specific exposure conditions. A range of coatings and surface treatments have been developed to make carbon steel screws rust-resistant for use in outdoor, marine and other demanding settings.
